A Proposal on the Reversal of the Voidforged Condition
Good evening everyone. My name is Professor Erica Whyll, and I teach classes in the field of Tempo-Spatial Manipulation to students of our University. I am also a half-elf who underwent a similar transformation as the exiles of Telogrus Rift did.
For those of you yet unaware, just before the
Fourth War broke out, a small sect of Blood Elves were exiled from their homeland for the sin of expreimenting with Void manipulation. After an accident opened a rift to a Void-infested plane, the Magisters were subjected to a particularly strange transformation, one relatively new to Azeroth. With help from Lady Alleria Windrunner and a group of Ethereals, the new Void Elves, or Ren'dorei, mastered their new state, becoming a type of being I refer to as "Voidforged".
I'd like to take a moment and ask you all something. What is a Void Elf? Or a Lightforged? What makes them unique beings from normal elves or Draenei?
As the name may imply, Voidforging is a process similar to the one undergone by the Lightforged in the Army of Light, though using Void as the core magic source. That much is obvious, but what exactly IS Forging? What exactly changes a Draenei into a Lightforged, or an Elf into a Ren'dorei? And, more towards the question whose answer I am truly interested in, how do we reverse this process?
I’d like to take a moment to turn that first question to the audience. What is a Forged? What makes us classify them so differently from others of their base species?
Tonight, I am happy to say that I believe I have discovered the answers to both those questions. What's more, I can prove it.
As you can see, the immediate changes are evident. My skin, once obvious in its Void infusion, now looks much the same as that of my peoples'. Those with a feel for the intangible waves of magical aura can attest that mine no longer bears the markings of Void energy. Not all the scars have disappeared, but I am almost entirely purified.
How have I accomplished this? The long answer is rather complicated, but the short answer requires not a word. That answer is this.
As many of you likely already recognize, this is an Azerite crystal infused in my very flesh. This crystal, and the transformation it has granted me, is the result of years of labor and study. Not just my own, but that of my colleagues, Professor Nythallas Reylah and Former Department Head Cynnus Starshadow.
Now, for the long answer. What exactly have I done to myself? Well, in the abstract, I have coalesced the Voidforged portion of my essence, of my soul, and stored it within a shard of Azerite. Effectively, the parts of myself that are Voidforged have been partitioned off from the rest of my being.
This crystal is the key component in stabilizing the procedure and making it viable long-term. While Azerite has proven itself something of a miracle compound for practically all fields of research, it is one specific property that caught my attention. Any guesses as to what that might be?
As first demonstrated by the work of two of the first researchers to work with the substance, Azerite possesses a very unique property: effect magnification.
To be exact, adding Azerite to any reaction causes either an amplification or suppression of the original process, based on the ratios used. In a scenario that has become quite well know among those of a more subtle disposition, a mix of Azerite and poison can have two outcomes: if the poison has a higher concentration, its effects when used are magnified and strengthened, whereas a higher concentration of Azerite creates a particularly powerful antidote for said poison.
It is this principle that caught my attention. It made me ask myself "What happens if you use two opposite forces in equal measure with an Azerite base?" Of course, considering my own reason for interest, the two opposites I experimented with had to be Light and Void. And the answer I discovered was fascinating. Once I pinned down the exact ratios needed, the outcome I observed was: nothing.
Now, by nothing, I clearly do not mean an absence of effect. I would have no reason to have gone so in-depth were that the case. No, when I say nothing, I mean that a complete absence of effect from either force was observed. When performed on an ooze I have infused with Void energy, this balancing resulted in a perfectly normal ooze, absent of both Void and Light Forging. It was then I had my answer.
By combining this unique property of Azerite to both magnify and suppress any substance it comes in contact with, depending on relative portions, with a holy ritual designed to purify its target of all corrupting influences, I have forced my body into a state of balance between both Light and Void.
Now, how does turning myself into an abominable hybrid of two diametrically opposed forces work to cure me? The answer, surprisingly, is quite simple. The process of Forging is a process of transmutation. When a Lightforged or a Ren'dorei is created, their bodies are not simply imbued with an abundance of the Forging magic; the process runs much deeper. The very soul of the patient is altered to be partially composed of this new power. They partially *become* Light or Void.
This alteration is not total, however. Were that the case, the patient's soul would be entirely replaced, effectively turning them into an Elemental in mortal skin. No, most of what we consider the soul remains as it was. The body is altered, part of the soul is altered, and at the subconscious level, some of the mind is altered. But who we are is not. By isolating those transmuted parts of myself, I could undo the major effects of the Forging process. Using the purification ritual, I temporarily brought the levels of both Light and Void in my essence into balance. Then I could direct both of these balanced energies into an Azerite vessel, which prevented either from overtaking and destroying the other. With the two energies in balance, the portion of my soul which was still Voidforged was protected, while also being unable to keep my body in a Void-infused state. Thus, my physical form reverted to its natural state of being, though with a few aspects irrevocably changed.
This process didn't just cure me, however. If I wanted that, I simply could have undergone a Lightforging process to neutralize the Voidforging. No, this method left me with the best of both worlds, that being the continued ability to tap into my Void energy. As I mentioned, the Void still exists within me. It is still a part of my soul, simply sealed away within my Azerite core. As such, I still possess a natural affinity for Void energy, allowing me to summon and control it as I wish. In fact, I may be in an even greater position of control, as I am no longer subject to the whispers that haunt my kin. Once again, those whispers come from a part of myself I am no longer in complete contact with. Having run myself through a battery of tests and experiments over the past few days, they do still leak through during periods of high stress, though nowhere to the degree as before.
This process is not without drawbacks, however. While my control over the Void has improved, it has come with a noticeable drop in power. I am unable to enter a pure void state, like many of my kin can, nor can I channel as much into my magic as I did before. However, I consider that more than a worthwhile trade to make for my sanity back.
By far more important, however, is the limitation of the Azerite. While a powerful substance, it is still somewhat restricted. Azerite, the solidified blood of our planet, is a sort of crystallized Arcane energy, and as such, it can be depleted when used too much. Now, this does not mean I need to replace my core entirely, but it does mean I have to recharge it to keep it stable and functional. As a Mage, I have no issue keeping it strong, but the demand will be greater on non-magi. Especially on Light or Void casters, as well as non-magical recipients. Obviously, those without a ready access to magical energy will either need access to other avenues of energy, such as mana crystals, or will need to learn to channel such energies themselves. Luckily, we're always looking for new students.
Wielders of Light and Void, however, will run into different problems. This method operates on maintaining balance within one's body and within the core. Infusing either with extra energy from either side is a quick way to tip the balance and undo the entire process. As such, they, as well, will require outside energies to fuel their cores.
This is a first step on the path. There is much still to be done, ways to refine the process, and remove the limitations it currently poses. However, I believe that with this first step, all my kin who were forced into this new life will now be able to choose for themselves how they wish to live. Before, being Voidforged was an accident, an experiment gone wrong. Now, with the development of this process, those who wish to return to their former natures, such as I, can have that option. This process is a gift, one I hope will soon be readily available for all those who wish to claim it. I, for one, am eager for the future. Thank you for listening tonight.
