For Your Protection
It was a nice day outside in Stormwind City, clear skies, a nice cool breeze, critters out and about, but there was something off, something not everyone felt. The ominous eerie feeling of an Old God’s presence. Jessica didn’t notice it too much, but her brother Kane... he certainly felt it. He knew the chill of war, be it against the Horde, Scourge, Legion, or an Eldritch Horror God of the Void; Kane knew the feeling well.
Kane sat at a desk in Jessica’s apartment, his place of residence since he got back from the Fourth War. Reading letters and reports from both Silver Hand and Alliance forces, all about the same threat, N’Zoth the Corruptor. Of course the freed Old God was making his big move when the Alliance and Horde were recovering from a blood war. Kane ran his hands through his golden blonde hair, letting out a sigh. “Fuuuuuuck.”
Jessica herself had started having nightmares due to the Old God, Kane didn’t know if his sister could withstand the influence of N’Zoth. Jessica was really all the knight had, he worried for his sister, protective big brother mode. Kane glanced to the staircase that lead to Jessica’s room, she had been taking her time getting ready for her day at University. Hmm. Those University folks are smart and strong from what I’ve seen. Maybe it’d be best if she stayed on campus until this Old God bullshit is over with. Kane pondered his options, rereading over the various letters and reports. Even Alice is all fucked up from this mess...
“Hey Jessie, could you come here for a sec?” Kane called for his sister. Jessica came down the stairs, in her Priestess Robes and wearing the same warm smile she always has. Though this time Kane could see she was trying to hide her uneasiness from her nightmares. Regardless Kane smiles at his sister. “What do you need?” Jessica spoke in her usual happy-go-lucky cheerful tone, but fear and unease still lingered. “Well, I was wondering, some things might be going down in the city, so I’d feel a lot more comfortable if you could see about staying at that University’s Campus for a bit. Think you could ask that charming Dean lady about arranging some temporary residence?” Kane kept up his smile as he regarded his sister.
Jessica stammered for a bit, tumbling over her words. “I-uh. Well, I co-could see about that. Bu-but...“ Jessica tried to speak softly. “Wi-with those attacks on so-some of the stu-students ha-happening...“ Kane’s eyebrow raised and his sapphire blue eyes flickered a burning gold. “What attacks.” His smile was gone and his demeanor went more serious. Protective Big Brother mode went into overdrive. Jessica stammers again, being caught and letting that rumor slip. AAAAAAAHHHH I SAID THAT OUT LOUD AND HE HEARD! HEHEARDHEHEARDHEHEARD! “I-It-It’s pro-probably noth-nothing! Ju-just a ru-rumor going aro-around campus! So-some students have been atta-attacked by some-someone or somethi-thing. No-nobody’s died or been t-too injured. Ju-just some minor bloo-blood loss I thi-think!”
Kane sighed as his sister explained the rumor. “Fucking- Alright. I’ll have to have a talk with whoever the hell is in charge of security over there. As well as Alice when she’s feeling better, see if she knows any more about these attacks. If my only family is in potential danger, I’ll be damned if I do nothing.” With a sigh Kane went over to his bag. “I got enough to deal with as it is.” Kane rummages through his bag, pulling out his Hearthstone, several journals, some Steamy Romance books, a PlayElf magazine, and various trinkets. “Where the hell did I put that thing..?” Kane continued to rummage. “Ah!” Kane pulls out a dagger, the hilt was gold-colored brass with a sapphire stone socketed in it; the blade was made of a silver-titansteel alloy and shined.
Kane approached Jessica and gave her the blade and scabbard, which was silver with a brass trim. “I was going to give you this for your birthday, but I think you’ll need it more now.” Jessica eyes the dagger, smiling. “Oh! Tha-thanks, bro! But... I don’t know how to use a dagger that much.” Kane chuckled. “Well, hopefully you won’t HAVE to use it. Just keep it hidden on you, alright? In case your attacked by the thing running around your campus. Go for the throat, abdomen, heart, or temple. Also remember the golden rule, stick them with the pointy end. Also that dagger should do well on any Eldritch Void nasties or undead. Even should muck up some Warlock spells, I believe.” Kane smiled at his sister.
Jessica smiles and hugged her brother. “Thanks, bro!! I’m sure it’ll come in handy if I’m attacked by anything! Though I really hope I’m not attacked.” I really don’t want to hurt anybody... Though if I am attacked and hurt this monster, I will be protecting the other students, right? I’ll be like Kane, won’t I? A strong protector people look up to and not down on? Kane hugged his sister and patted her head. “Oh, and one more thing. I know you’ve been having nightmares.” Kane walked over to his desk and searched through the drawer. He pulled out a necklace and returns to Jessica. “Just wear this, it should help steel your mind against the nightmares.” Kane smiled as he handed the necklace to Jessica. A silver pendant with a rune of Mental Fortification etched into it held on a chord. Jessica eyes the necklace and smiles as she puts it on. “Pretty!! Thank you!! Will it... really help with my scary dreams?” Please say yes. I don’t know how many more times I can see you die... Kane smiled and patted Jessica’s head. “As long as you wear it, yes.” Technically, not a lie. I’m just not telling her it ALSO steels her mind from an Old God that’s trying to corrupt her.
Jessica smiles and hugs her brother again before grabbing her school bag and heading out. Kane shouted a reminder to his sister. “Remember to ask the Dean lady about temporarily staying at Campus until the craziness in the city dies down!” Jessica shouted back as she headed out the door. “Yep!! Ask Dean about staying at Campus for a while, got it! Love you, brother! See you when I get back! Byyyeee!” I’M GONNA BE LATE! SHITSHITSHITSHITSHIT! Kane smiled as his sister went off, glad she was doing this University thing. Kane lets out a sigh and groan. Uuuugh. We just ended the Faction War and now an Old god is trying to kill us. How have I not gone grey and managed to retain my youthful looks? Alright... back to these letters. I should defend the homefront, but the Vale and Uldum seem in a bit more peril... What was this report about giant flying worms? Kane went back to scratching his head as he pondered his course of action.
