The Yearly Visit
It was that time of year again. Ah yes, Alice always loved this time of year. Hallow’s End was in full swing by now! Witches, ghouls, ghosts, and whatnot were all about with spook in the air! The air cooled and the vegetation was readied for harvest! Alice’s love for this holiday and time of year only grew with her Void Changes. This year was even more exciting, too! For this year, not only did the University Alice worked for hold spookified events, but Alice also had a date! A trick-or-treating date she’d been looking forward to!
Even through all this excitement and love, Alice was always hit by a wave of sadness and sorrow, she knew how to hide it and let the excitement help drown it out. But why did Alice get these feelings around the best time of year? It was also Alice’s birthday. While Alice greatly enjoyed her birthday and the celebrations, there’s something she’s done on her birthday since she was a teenager. Every year on her birthday, October 26th, Alice ventured to the gravesite of her parents in Quel’thalas. She had to go there and see them. She had to let them know she was still around and kicking, to give them an update on how her life was. Alice always thought that with the veil between worlds being thin around this time of year, maybe… maybe they’d hear her from beyond… maybe one year… they’d even come out to say hi to her… even if just one last time…
Alice didn’t go into work that day, she donned her disguise and went to the Deeprum Tram. Once Alice got to Ironforge, she called her Voidsworn Seeker and flew off north. She’d have to be sneaky, even though the Fourth War was over, Alice was still banished from Quel’thalas. Kill on sight, even. Edward was meeting her though. He’d help her be sneaky. Lillithra was also going to be there to help out.
Alice arrived at the border. Edward was waiting there for her. “Hey there kiddo.” “The Warlock will betray you. He can’t be trusted. He’s a corpse. A corpse pumped up with Fel.” Alice smiled, hugging Edward. “Hey Eddy. How’d you get the guards to clear out?” Edward chuckled. “I just summoned a couple of Imp Swarms. Lillithra came over and told the guards she needed help quelling them. They took the bait perfectly.” “See? He even summons in swarms of wild Imps to do his bidding and cause chaos! Demons from the Legion. The Legion that made the Lich King. The Lich King that made the Scourge. The Scourge that took your parents ad made him what he is. The corpse can’t be trusted. Nobody can. Nobody but us.” Alice nodded as Edward wasted no time summoning his Accursed Wrathsteed. Alice hopped on the horse with Edward and they rode to the gravesite. “Lillithra will meet us there.”
Alice and Edward rode mostly in silence until Edward spoke up. “It’s nice to see you, Alice. I only wish I didn’t have to see my daughter under such sad circumstances.” Alice nodded. “Well… with the war over and the truce, maybe you can come see me in Stormwind!” Edward smiled what he could with the remaining flesh. “Perhaps, daughter. We can hope that will soon be the case.” “Peace? Don’t be naive, vessel. Peace won’t last. It never does! The Great Ones have sown the seeds too deep and those vessels will unknowingly help the seeds flourish and blossom! Your world will be delivered back to it’s true home…” Alice smiled hopefully. “I hope so. How have you been recently?” Edward continued to steer his demonic steed. “Oh I’ve been well enough. With the war over, I’ve been able to focus more on my studies into the Twisting Nether and Fel. Though with Sylvanas’ revelation, many of the Forsaken feel more lost than ever. They have nobody to look to for leadership or protection. Many of them are… uneasy to trust the living Horde members. Especially with the descrimination we face, even having renounced Windrunner. With all the turmoil, Lillian Voss has really stepped up with helping the Forsaken out. She’s a good lass, I trust and respect her.” Alice nodded. “What about you, Edward? How are you holding up?” Edward sighed. “A story for another time, Alice. We’re nearly there.” Alice nodded.
Alice and Edward approached the graves. Two simple tombstones, human architecture. One read “Here lies Liarea Nadradina. Beloved Mother.”, the other one read “Here lies Aertin Nadradina. Beloved Father.” Alice hopped off the Wrathsteed along with Edward. As they approached the graves, Alice lowered her hood and her robes morphed back to normal. Lillithra also descended from a tree. “Alice. Edward.” “Look at the Illidari. Even with their elite strikeforce and Legion ship, they will never be a match for what lurks in the shadows. Their misguided fixation on the Legion has only aided us. Blind fools.” Alice smiled at Lillithra, but the smile quickly faded as Alice approached the graves.
Edward and Lillithra sat back as Alice approached the graves. Tears welled up in her eyes as her ears drooped. Alice sat down in front of them and pulled a pumpkin out of her bag, along with a normal carving knife, a candle, and a scoop. Alice also pulled out a bag of candies. She ate and carved as she talked with her parents. “Hey mom. Hey dad. It’s me, Alice. It’s… that time of year again. I… I miss you both. I miss you a lot. I was employed by a University in Stormwind. I’m their Void Professor! They’re all really nice people. A couple grumps, but most of them are lovely. You’d love meeting them. Especially Cani. Cani’s a floof of hugs in a tophat. There’s also Emmy. Emmy’s like a big sister to me, though I feel like I disappoint her a lot. There’s also Maureen! Dad would have liked her. Maureen’s a bard and an absolute treat. They’re all absolute treats. I’ve even been helping a new hire, Cynnus, with her Void research. Jason’s also helping too, but Cynnus doesn’t know about him. I like Cynnus. She poked me with science. I’m helping people! I think they like me a lot! There’s many more, too! They’re all like a family to me. I can’t imagine my life without them, any of them. I love them all so much.” Alice ate a few pieces of candy before continuing.
Alice smiled as she continues, tears starting to roll down her face. “Outside the University I’ve made a lot of friends! Claire, Vel, Bast, Waltur, and many others! Oh, I was also married for a time and even crafted a daughter! The Void made me infertile, so I had to get creative. But… you’d love Zora. Sam and I aren’t married anymore, though… We split up a while ago… But I don’t mind too much.” Alice has some more pieces of candy. “Oh! I got a girlfriend! Her name is Sidda! She’s the best, you two would have loved her so much! Maybe I’ll bring her sometime and you can meet her! She also works at the University as the Culinary Professor. I… love her so much. I’ve never been happier, she can always make me smile. Or blush... “ Alice giggled and blushes a bit.
Alice continued on. “Things have been going great. A few bumps, sure. N’zoth, an Old God, was released from his prison, but he’s yet to make a move. I’m… not sure what to do. Nobody really does. I wish dad were here, he’d know. We’re all going to do everything we can to defend Azeroth, though! There’s also tensions rising between the Light and Void. It… worries me but… well what doesn’t? I still wish I had mom to sing me her song some nights, though…”
Alice continues to carve her pumpkin. Eventually she finished and smiles at it. She lights her candle with a match and places it in the pumpkin. Alice smiles and turns it around, showing the graves. The pumpkin had a pen, lute, and bow carved into it, with three stick figures holding hands, two adults and a child. Alice also carved a message into the pumpkin “You’ll always be in my heart and memory. I love you both -Alice.” By this point, Alice had tears streaming down her face. Alice sat there silently, crying as she looked at the graves and pumpkin. “These feelings are holding you back. We can take them from you. Just give in. No? Then how about we help you see them again. We can do that. You can do that. The dead don’t have to stay dead. Enough Void infusing will get any corpse to dance. Let us show you how…”
After a while, Alice wiped her face and smiled at the grave. “I need to go, I got a date to get ready for. I’ll see you both next year. I miss you mom and dad. I love you both.” Alice placed some roses near the graves. “I love you both so much…” Alice stood up, wiped her eyes again, and walked back to Edward and Lillithra. The two hugged Alice tightly. They said their goodbyes and went their separate ways for now. The light from the candle in the pumpkin began to flicker and flare in tune to a song….
