First Draft for the Big Blurb
We invite all to join us on August 21st at 7 PM for a dedication ceremony & reception to celebrate the newest addition to Stormwind University's facilities. Those who have attended our Colloquium series in the last few months have already enjoyed it. Now that the first phase of construction is complete it is time to formally open the Liu-Tsao Center.
In place of our usual Colloquium this month will be an evening of brief talks on the philosophy underlying the university's public programs, the history behind the design of the Liu-Tsao Center, and contributions to peaceful cooperation through everyday practical activities.
The Liu-Tsao Center is intended to be more than an academic structure. It will also provide a public space for the expression of all that Pandaren culture offers for the vibrant future of our world.
In addition to the talks, all attendees will be invited to participate in the formal dedication. A catered reception will round out the evening.
IC location: Liu-Tsao Center grounds on hillside behind main campus
OOC location: Dreamer's Pavilion, Jade Forest, Pandaria
This is a non-aligned friendly RP event. All races/classes/levels are welcome. Speakers will be from both factions so elixirs will be needed. Some taxi / summoning assist will be available prior to the event.
My initial suggestion for the event program:
- Dean - brief welcome & speaker intros
- Zhangshe - on the history behind the Center's name, architecture & purpose
- Other Speakers
- Dean's remarks
- Dedication: the Dean, Zhangshe & speakers light incense & place the sticks on the altar (in-game at the northern end of the Dreamer's Pavilion area). Then all attendees are invited to add a stick of incense of their own.
- Dean declares the Center open
The name is changed slightly from the grant submission in the portfolio. It seems more balanced to have both Liu Lang & Emperor Tsao in the title to match the two statues, which captures the spirit of the center. “Liu-Tsao” flows off the tongue better than the other way round. It also is a sly riff on Lao Tzu.
Thanks! Just realized I should post a link for anyone who isn't sure what the Liu-Tsao Center is IC -
Zhangshe's contribution at the ceremony will be explaining how those two great culture heroes embody the spirit of the Center, which is itself a uniquely Pandaren expression of the University's philosophy & raison d'être.
This all looks great so far, Zhang!
I feel like the "Big Blurb" is very appropriate for the WrA forums advertisement as is, despite being a first draft. It hits all of the main informational points, as well as provides some IC headcanon background, while also backing that up with some Blizzard canon lore intertwined! If I'll be using this "blurb" for the SWU Colloquium advertisement, I'll probably spruce it up just a tad using my own style and language, so it's not necessarily something I'd tell you to edit.
I like the name "Liu-Tsao" as well. As you pointed out, it really rolls off the tongue, and the tongue-in-cheek reference to Lao Tzu makes it an even better choice!
The event program looks good, although the Dean's Remarks section will most likely be more like a summation from the Dean/possibly whatever kind of "speech" I'm able to come up with by then. :) Should our speakers say all that pretty much needs to be said, I have no problem with just saying a few words to introduce the next leg of the event and lead in to the dedication ceremony itself. The order and the flow of the program looks fine as is. It succeeds in engaging our guests and attendees and keeping them engaged, especially once the speakers have had their time.
A talking points outline would be helpful for contextual purposes as well as keeping our "speeches" concise and preventing much overlap in the message we're trying to convey.
Presently, I've got Elliistra confirmed as one of our speakers. Gotosh would be a great candidate as well, but I've not yet had occasion to ask him. I have some others in mind, but we'll see. I know we don't have a whole lot of time left, but ideally, I'd like to have a few speakers on hand to provide unique enough perspectives on the causes we're championing for this new IC addition to the Stormwind University campus!
That's about all I have for right now. Should anything else come to me, I'll suggest it here!
Thanks for the feedback. I definitely intended from the start for you to rework it however you see fit. Glad you will make it your own.
Glad you caught why it's labelled "Remarks" . :) Again, entirely up to you how you use it.
My personal hope would be that we have one or more Horde speakers. Of course it all depends on availability.
I started off this morning to write up talking points. without intending it to, somehow it transformed into a draft of Zhangshe's part of the presentation. I posted it in the Portfolio.
I guess the talking points would be:
- Basic architectural plan for the Center & how it embodies the Pandaren Way.
- The story of Liu Lang. Emperor Tsao's efforts to preserve Pandaren culture during the Mogu Empire.
- How the statues represent Chi-Ji's saying "Hope's fire grows when the flames come together".
Plenty of room there for everyone else to touch on the same themes if they wish. Or be like Liu & wander off in some other direction altogether. :)
If any of the speakers want inspiration or background details I guess we could link them to the Center proposal in the portfolio. Or it's easier for them I could put together a pdf & put it in my drop box then provide a public link.
Hmmmm ... maybe I should do a pdf anyway that can be "posted for public review" as a bump by Zhangshe of the WrA forum thread ? Or maybe that's a bit too much. Dunno, just doing the literary equivalent of thinking out loud.
