I apologize sincerely for having to bring this matter up to you. I recognize that you are busy, and have enough to worry about without having to be anxious over the conduct of our illustrious staff. But in this situation, I fear the matter could not be ignored.
Earlier this evening, Visiting Professor Aleithel contacted me over the Chatstone to ask if I was busy. I went over to see what the problem was, and it turns out she was upset with Visiting Professor Mareen Goodwin's recent choice of company.
Now, normally I would have just let Aleithel sound off to me, offered her some advice, and left it at that. Believe me, that was indeed my intent too! But while she was doing that, Mareen and her friend Natrey walked by and heard the conversation. My earlier advice to Aleithel was to calm down and simply talk to Natrey in a civil manor so that they'd come to know each other a bit better, and trust each other a tiny bit more. This, however, was unsuccessful.
The conversation devolved into a full blown public argument, and Mareen and I were forced to become mediators. For the first few minutes, we were successful in keeping things somewhat orderly enough to not draw attention. But as time progressed, the passive aggressive comments--mostly on Aleithel's part mind you--turned things into an argument again.
Long story short, Aleithel was wary of Natrey's criminal past, and instead of letting things go for now--like I advised--she kept accusing Natrey of lying about multiple factors.
Natrey, on the other hand, claimed that he was issued a royal pardon for his crimes. Aleithel also said this was a lie, as he had "no evidence to prove it."
This isn't the part that concerns me, necessarily. Given that she retired from the guard not long ago, I can understand where the habit comes from. What does bother me, and what I believe reflects poorly on the University, however, is that she insisted on yelling at him, not giving him a chance to go grab his documents. Something that I--again--strongly advised.
Eventually I had to intervene a bit more aggressively, using a Counterspell to silence them both for a few seconds so I could get my point across. I told Natrey to go grab his documents, and Aleithel to go grab a guard so that we could get them verified.
I had. To get. The guard. Involved.
Thankfully, Staff Sergeant Morrowgrove came by and cleared things right up. Natrey's documents were indeed legitimate, and he was pardoned for his prior crimes. However, as things were drawing to a close, I heard more of the story as to what started this whole mess.
Apparently, sometime Tuesday, while Mareen and Natrey were spending time together as friends, Aleithel had caught wind of their whereabouts and came storming into the bar. This is the part where I might start remembering the chain of events wrong, so take this with a grain of salt. She caught them kissing, became enraged, and slapped Natrey across the face. Once again, in the middle of a public bar.
Natrey was going to press assault charges but decided against it tonight while Sergeant Morrowgrove was filing the report.
Again, I am very sorry for having to bring up this report of misconduct to you. But, as I hope you can now agree, it couldn't be ignored.
To end this letter, I just want to say that I do not believe Aleithel should be completely removed from the staff. Hot-headed as she may be, I believe she had the best of intentions, and only wished to protect a friend and fellow staff member. However, the point needs to be hammered home. This kind of misconduct is not, in any way shape or form, okay.
When time permits, I shall wish to talk with you later about what I believe is a necessary consequence. Alethel's situation is rather unique, and I believe that I may be able to offer an invaluable perspective on it's whole.
~Sincerely, Thaumaturge Emmy Bluefire.
(As an OOC note, I will say that Aleithel and Mareen have spoken with each other OOCly and have agreed to lay low and keep the IC drama to a minimum for a long while after this. Everyone is still friends OOCly as well, and I doubt there'll be any head-butting in guild chat :P )
