Curricula Proposal for Advanced Magical Constructs:
AMC-201
Overview:
This primary goal of this course is for students to build on the foundation for animating normally inanimate objects that would be obtained in introductory magic courses. This course should begin with simple arcane or otherwise constructs that can be done in a short period after the start of the semester. From that foundation the course will build to smaller scale golems. The students will then move to more advanced concepts such as intelligent constructs or constructs derived from less common magical sources such as constructs utilizing multiple power sources or those derived from the ineffable arts. The students will move finally to constructs containing a soul as well as unusually applied constructs before moving to the final examination. Final examination will consist of the class being divided into even teams each of which will design, construct, and empower a full-sized golem or other construct within reason that will be judged on the completion of a variety of milestones.
Course Objectives:
1. To provide students with a sturdy foundation from which any number of constructs could be designed from.
2. To provide the knowledge to build arcane constructs which are much more sophisticated than the average golem.
3. To provide more in-depth knowledge on construct power sources and their interaction with the enchantments used to animate them.
4. To provide useful insight into uses of constructs outside the realm of what would be considered standard and how to apply those uses to constructs built by the student.
5. To ensure that students have gained knowledge and skill such that if they so wished they may easily be employed for making sophisticated arcane constructs for any number of uses.
Prerequisites:
Students wishing to enroll in Advanced Magical Constructs should have completed introductory coursework within the Arcane Arts department. Students will be unable to succeed in this course without a rudimentary knowledge of spellcasting, enchantment, and directing of magical energies. In addition, it is preferred for a student to have at least one additional introductory magic course related to controlling the elements, nature magic, death magic, fel-magic, rune magic, or light magic. This is to ensure that they have a basic understanding of at least one other magical art other than the arcane for the more advanced topics of the course.
Methodology:
The design of constructs is a broad topic that only gets more complex the deeper it is delved into. It contains anything from a broom sweeping the cobblestones of Silvermoon, to incredibly powerful and complex constructs created by the titans. As such this course will seek to give students the skills required to innovate and to build onto the layers of knowledge already provided by this course long after they have left it. By the time this course is complete, students should know how to animate a vast variety of different constructs, how to build them, design them, empower them with a variety of sources, and most importantly how to creatively build a construct that is unique to the students specific strengths and experiences.
Evaluation:
Evaluation of this course will be solely at the discretion of the Head of the Arcane Arts Department, the Dean, and the primary instructor. This course will be graded primarily on the individual performance of each student with the except of final examination which will be done in relation to the best performing team. That is to say if a student is on the team with the highest score for the project, they immediately are to receive full marks and other teams marks are to be made in relation to the team with the highest score. This course will be rigorous and students may well receive few high marks until late in the semester. This is due to the large amount of material present in this course, and marks for the end of semester course grade will be based on the median mark for the semester falling within a letter grade of C.
Summary:
Fields including creating constructs as a career are numerous and have as much variety as the field itself. It is the goal of this course to ensure through rigorous examination that students have the knowledge required to establish their career within any of these fields and do so in a way that exceeds what would normally be expected of a simple enchanter. With this knowledge, students may go on to create a lucrative and rewarding business for themselves within any of these fields, or simply expand this knowledge into a new field all-together through research at the university.
